Onion Ring Bokeh. While it can show up and look rather strange it is very unlikely to ever show up and be of concern in a real photo. Handheld tests with my 5014 asph below. 6152019 Less wide and slightly faster. 9242020 Immediately I sold it and then later had the 4012 CV and loved it until I noticed again the dreaded onion ring bokeh.
The heavy vignetting wide open is to be expected from such an extreme design although is should clear up closing down. 4242020 Getting bogged down in things like onion ring bokeh cat eye bokeh bubble bokeh and taking pictures of lights at night just to look at round blobs seems silly given that the people looking at your images dont care or notice one way or the other. 28 and F4 ILCE-7RM3 Zeiss Planar T FE 50mm F14 ZA SEL50F14Z lens 50mm f28 15s 100 ISO 00 EV. Personally I dont like it for the abrupt sharpness drop off close to the corners but many people greatly enjoy this lens. Quite often they appear in shots containing larger bokeh balls eg photos taken with the focus point set to about 1-3 meters with spot light sources in. Generally the cheaper zooms and especially superzooms 10x zoom suffer the most from these artefacts although there are several L lenses.

Bokeh Balls and Onion Rings Oh My. You need to stop down to 28 for images truly completely acceptable across the frame but at F4 you can get tack sharp images from edge to edge. The pattern is more uniform than the diffraction pattern. 4172020 Weve seen a slight onion ring effect in the bokeh of some Sigma lenses appearing as concentric circles with feint lines within bokeh discs of defocused lights and bright spots.
